How to Update to iOS 5.1 – iPhone 4S, 4, 3GS, iPad 2, 1, iPod Touch 4G, 3G? Well, iOS 5.1 was released for public today. As we told you earlier that iOS 5.1 will support Japanese Siri for iPhone 4S and fix many bugs. Likely iOS 5.1 will improve battery life for iPhone 4S. So let me show you how simply update your iOS device to iOS 5.1.

update to ios 5.1

We have to different ways to update to iOS 5.1. The first one is to restore your device to completely new iOS firmware, the second one is to update to 5.1 OTA (over-the-air) which will only download 50MB to your iDevice.

Required Downloads to upgrade to iOS 5.1:

These below files are required for who will restore to completely new iOS firmware.

Step 1: Connect your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad into your computer via USB
Step 2: Open iTunes hold Alt (Shift in Windows) and click on the ‘restore’ button then point it to iOS 5.1 ipsw file you download above. Wait for between 10 and 15 minutes for the new iOS to be moved over. Congratulations.

This is pretty simple, just go to Settings > General > Software Update

Your iDevice will check the available updates, then just tap download and wait 10 to 15 minutes.

Note: Jailbreakers stay away from iOS 5.1 if don’t wanna lose your jailbreak.

This is not working for me.  I want to get rid of the jailbreak and go to 5.1 but itunes is telling me the device is not eligible for the build.

HELP ..  anyone know how I should restore this 4s and take it back to normal?

jtdesigns I have the same problem and have spent the las 18 hours straight looking for a solution, but it seem apple has stopped signing firmwares meaning those having custom firmwares cannot update :( this is really frustrating, I really want to get rid of the jb and go for the 5.1! HELP!!!

jtdesigns The problem may be the redirection to Saurik's server: For the Jailbreak to work, Tinyumbrella tells MacOS not to talk to Apple's server for the authentication, but to Saurik. If you want to get rid of the Jailbreak and update to 5.1, you need to remove that redirection, so iTunes can talk to Apple's authentication service again.

Solution: Use a text editor and open the file /etc/hosts

Look for the line that contains "apple" and write a "#" in front of it (without quotes). You will need admin rights for this. Restart your computer, and now the update should work.

I need to know if I will lose my installed APPS and preferences if I do this update? I am using Iphone 3GS 16GB running on iOS 5.0.1 and have the latest Itunes installed. I know about making backups etc and do so regularly, just need to know if my apps will stay installed AND their current preferences.

Please anyone confirm me asap.

Thanks for the tip, it is allways welcome.

Lets see what other minor changes it has.

The 2nd gen iPod wasn't supported on iOS 5.0 why would it be now? The last iOS for that iPod was 4.2.1 or 4.3.5.
